USFA Releases Data on Firefighter Deaths in 2012
Eighty-one firefighters died on duty in 2012, according to a report by the United States Fire Administration (USFA).

In 'Firefighter Fatalities in the United States in 2012,' the USFA reveals that:
  • Of the 81 deaths, 42 were volunteers, 28 were careers, and 11 were wildland agency firefighters.
  • Heart attacks were the most frequent cause of death.
  • Wildland fires claimed the lives of 15 firefighters.
  • Vehicle crashes killed 14 firefighters.
The USFA report is released annually. It aims to help identify approaches that could reduce the number of firefighter deaths in future years.

Preventing Musculoskeletal Disorders with an Exoskeleton
Twelve European organizations will be developing an intelligent, easy-to-maneuver, and wearable body exoskeleton to help workers prevent musculoskeletal disorders, especially those common in assembling and dismantling processes.

Robo-Mate is meant to be worn by workers so they can exert less physical effort while performing repetitive lifting tasks. It will involve merging human-guided manipulators with computer controlled robots.

Robo-mate is funded by the European Union. The three-year project began in September.

Past Smokers Face the Same Risk of Heart Attack as Non-smokers
A new study reveals that people who quit smoking have the same risk of heart attack as people who never started the habit.

Presented during the European Society of Cardiology Congress last month, the new study specifically examined the relationship between kicking the habit and the severity of coronary artery disease (CAD).

Active and past smokers had more severely blocked coronary arteries and were more likely to have stenoses in a few arteries. After two-years, past smokers still had CAD, but had the same risk of heart attack as nonsmokers.

The study involved 13,372 patients from nine countries.

How Does Safety Affect Stock
Market Performance?
A strong culture of safety and health has been linked to higher stock market value and returns, according to a study published in the Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine.

Safety award-winning companies were compared with the top 500 publicly traded companies for the past 15 years. And it was revealed that businesses who have been awarded for their safety and health efforts had healthier bottom lines.

As the abstract of the study put it, 'building cultures of health and safety provides a competitive advantage in the market place.'
