New Training Program Highlights Everyday Forms of Workplace Violence

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va., Dec. 12, 2013 -- DuPont Sustainable Solutions has launched a new training program, Workplace Violence: Looking Out for Each Other, which alerts employees to the less newsworthy, but damaging kinds of workplace violence, such as threats, intimidation, harassment, bullying, cyber-bullying and domestic abuse.

"We are sadly aware of the mass shootings and national tragedies that present workplace violence at its extreme," said Amy Townsend, vice president for Human Resources, Learning & Development, DuPont Sustainable Solutions. "But violence at work often takes place every day and in less severe forms; that can often go unnoticed, yet are no less hurtful." .

Workplace Violence: Looking Out for Each Other stresses that violence need not be physical, but can instead manifest verbally (obscene phone calls and shouting matches) or nonverbally (repeatedly giving colleagues the cold shoulder).

This program helps employees identify the sources and causes of workplace violence; understand the impact of violence on morale and productivity; spot warning signs, including types of threats; defuse potentially violent situations through compromise, collaboration, and avoidance; and create a culture in which employees look out for each other and report potentially violent incidents before they escalate.
