NIOSH Launches Center for Motor
Vehicle Safety
John Howard, Director of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), unveiled the Center for Motor Vehicle Safety during the 2013 NSC Congress & Expo.

The Center's primary aim is to help understand and prevent vehicular crashes, which are the leading cause of work-related deaths in the United States. Housed in Morgantown, West Virginia, the Center functions as a "virtual center" that allows NIOSH researchers from a wide range of fields to collaborate with each other and with other public and private sector partners to improve road and driving safety.

The Center seeks to determine risk factors, especially those in high-risk occupations and industries; to enhance the safety and design of vehicles; and to assess the effectiveness of promising road safety interventions, including in-vehicle monitoring systems in light-vehicle fleets.

New York State Provides Motorists with 'Texting Zones'
To help reduce distracted-driving related vehicular accidents, the state of New York has introduced 91 "texting zones." These are areas where drivers can pull over and safely read or respond to a text message or phone call.

These texting zones include Park-n-Ride facilities, rest stops, and parking facilities along the state's main highways. Several signs have been put up to inform motorists of these texting zones; one says "It Can Wait. Text Stop 5 Miles."

The launch of texting zones parallels the state's crackdown on distracted driving. This past summer saw a 365 percent increase in the number of tickets issued.

New Study: Silica a Carcinogen
A paper published in the American Journal of Epidemiology offers additional evidence that silica is a carcinogen and can raise one's risk of lung cancer.

The study followed more than 30,000 workers in China over a forty-year period. After a follow-up decades later, 546 deaths from lung cancer were identified.

The study suggests that permissible exposure limits might be inadequate in keeping employees safe from silica. Last month, OSHA announced a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking on silica exposure.
