EPA Adds 13 New Substances to Toxics Release Inventory

Early last June, the Environmental Protection Agency added 13 nonylphenol ethoxylates (NPEs) to the Toxics Release Inventory (TRI) list of reportable chemicals.

NPEs are nonionic surfactants used in adhesives, wetting agents, emulsifiers, stabilizers, dispersants, defoamers, cleaners, paints, and coatings and are highly toxic to aquatic organisms.

Visit OSHA’s Occupational Chemical Database

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has a dedicated web page that includes:

  • Chemical identification and physical properties
  • Exposure limits
  • Sampling information

The database lists the chemicals, provides the CAS number and analytic code (IMIS #), and synonyms for the said substances. Users may search for the chemicals by name, by CAS number, or conduct an alphabetic search.

The OSHA database compiles information from several government agencies and organizations.

OSHA Moves Up Four Standards in Spring Regulatory Agenda 2018

In the Spring Regulatory Agenda for 2018, three OSHA standards moved to the pre-rule stage, while an update to the Hazard Communication Standard was transferred to the proposed rule stage.

All four standards are part of the latest Spring 2018 Regulatory Agenda of the Department of Labor.

The three standards in the pre-rule stage are Emergency Response and Preparedness, Prevention of Workplace Violence in Health Care and Social Assistance, and Tree Care.

Another change to the agenda pertains to the Beryllium standard, which was in the final rule stage but has been moved back to the proposed rule phase. The Crane Operator Qualification standard, once up for revision, has been rolled back to the proposed rule stage.

10 Year High on Positive Drug Tests in the U.S.

The drug use positivity rate in 2017 for the American workforce stood at 4.2 percent, a dramatic increase compared to 3.5 rate in 2012, according to a new Quest Diagnostics report.

The 2017 rate represents the highest in over 10 years. The Quest Diagnostics report for 2017 shows that the use of cocaine and amphetamines has risen, as has the use of marijuana. Prescription opiates, however, dropped significantly across the country.

The report also features an interactive map and trend lines by three-digit zip code. Data for states is also available.
